Studies have shown that individuals with diabetes are at a higher risk of developing a number of potentially severe health problems. Long-term high blood glucose levels can lead to several serious diseases that can negatively affect the heart and blood vessels, eyes, kidneys, nerves and teeth. Roughly one-third of all people with diabetes suffer from diabetic retinopathy which is caused by chronic hyperglycemia (high blood glucose). It is the most widespread diabetic eye disease and considered a leading cause of vision loss in working adults. Diabetes is also one of the risk factors that lead to cataracts, glaucoma and dry eyes. Patients can get all these tested at the hospital by their well-trained and highly-experienced optometry professionals who use state-of-the-art equipment.
General Manager of Mount Lotus Eye and ENT Hospitals Dr. Saman P. Basnayake commented, “Diabetes is a serious disease that is increasingly becoming a health crisis not only in Sri Lanka but also across the world. On this World Diabetes Day, we want to make the general public aware of the many dangers of diabetes and provide them the chance to get their blood sugar and other health indicators checked.
