In a pioneering effort to advance sustainable waste management, Coca-Cola Beverages Sri Lanka, launched Sri Lanka’s first-ever Electronic Three-Wheeler (E-Tuk) for plastic waste management, under the auspices of the Central Environmental Authority (CEA). The launch event took place at the CEA premises, with the presence of CEA staff and other distinguished guests, coinciding with the celebration of World Recycling Day on March 18. This occasion highlighted the importance of recycling and collective responsibility in promoting sustainable practices for a cleaner, greener future.

Developed by Vega Innovations, this cutting-edge E-Tuk was officially handed over by CEA Chairman Prof. Tilak Hewawasam to the Wadduwa Material Recovery Facility (MRF), established by CCBSL, at CEA premises. This initiative was supported by Eco Spindles Pvt Ltd. and is designed to revolutionize plastic waste collection, reinforcing CCBSL’s commitment to sustainable plastic waste management and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). This introduction of the E-Tuk is yet another project under “Give Back Life,” CCBSL’s flagship PET waste management program, aligned with the global World Without Waste initiative.
By incorporating innovative technology into waste management practices, this initiative sets a benchmark for corporate environmental responsibility while advancing sustainable development goals and promoting the circular economy.

Speaking at the event, Chairman of the Central Environmental Authority, Prof. Tilak Hewawasam stated, “This pioneering initiative aligns with Sri Lanka’s national goals of reducing plastic waste and promoting sustainable environmental practices. This collaboration serves as a model for how the private sector can support national sustainability efforts through innovation and commitment.”
Coca-Cola Beverages Sri Lanka has long been at the forefront of sustainability initiatives, becoming the first corporate entity in the country to establish Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs), which now stands at 10 across Sri Lanka, deploy over 600 waste collection bins across the island, and adapt beach stretches for daily cleaning programs that have directly benefited over 50 Samurdhi beneficiaries.
“This E-Tuk initiative is a testament to our unwavering commitment to sustainability and Extended Producer Responsibility. By leveraging innovation, we aim to inspire other corporations to embrace eco-friendly practices, commit to net-zero goals, and drive meaningful change in waste management and we are happy to have launched the e-Tuk Tuk on World Recycling Day together with the CEA,” said Thamari Senanayake, Director Public Affairs, Communications and Sustainability of Coca-Cola Beverages Sri Lanka.
The launch of the E-Tuk is expected to further strengthen Sri Lanka’s waste management infrastructure while encouraging corporate stakeholders to integrate sustainable solutions into their operations. As Sri Lanka continues its journey toward a greener future, initiative such as this mark a significant step in innovation and responsible environmental stewardship.
