  1. A well designed clinical trial conducted by researchers from RemediumOne and the Clinical Trials Unit, University of Kelaniya in collaboration with Dr. Dimuthu Muthukuda, Consultant Endocrinologist at Sri Jayewardenepura General Hospital, has shown Ceylon Cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) effectively reduced blood sugar in patients with Type 2 DM.
  2. In the trial published in the international journal PLoS One, clinical trial participants who took a daily dose of cinnamon saw a decrease in fasting blood sugar at 12 weeks compared to those who did not receive cinnamon.
  3. While the extract also showed potential to lower LDL cholesterol (also known as bad cholesterol), this change was not statistically significant over 12 weeks.
  4. As expected, no adverse effects were reported.
  5. This is the first well-designed randomized controlled clinical trial with a larger sample size than previous studies, demonstrating a potential benefit of Ceylon Cinnamon extract in lowering blood sugar.
  6. The researchers suggest that these results highlight the medicinal value of Ceylon Cinnamon, emphasizing the need for further research in this area.
  7. The full study findings are published in PLoS ONE and can be accessed at https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0317904.
  8. The trial was sponsored by SDS Spices (Pvt) Ltd, but had no role in the design and conduct of the study, and analysis of trial data.
